Microfiction: Fish and Cats

100 Words

The fish swim in the tank. Rambunctious swirls of shockingly bright colors, purple, pink, orange, red, green, and blue. They dart back and forth, seemingly randomly, causing tiny bubbles to float upwards as if their daydreams are floating away.  Some linger near the stones at the bottom, enjoying lazy laps around their neighborhood. Others, perhaps the youngsters, flutter rapidly up and down, in circles, across the tank, as if playing tag. The entire scene is filtered in a blueish light from the fluorescent lights at the top of the tank. Neon plants decorate the ground of this happy aquatic community.

A cat observes the fish, curious eyes closely following the moving shapes. The dedicated feline watches for many weeks, learning, waiting, anticipating. One day the kitty succeeds at stealing a small, slippery snack. The tank community becomes one fish fewer.

  1. Hi Ann Marie,

Your way of using adjectives to beautifully describe each detail of the story truly is magnificent! I honestly didn't even know what was going on in the story, I was just too busy imagining the beautiful fish in the tank. Great job on this microfiction, I really enjoyed reading it!
